Tolkien Boardgames of the 1970’s

Board game collectors seem to have a diverse range of interests, but one niche that seems very popular among collectors is Tolkien boardgames. These are boardgames which are based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. For a long time, Tolkien’s estate limited the amount of licensing they were willing to do, but in the last ten or twenty years, more and more licensed products, including boardgames, have been allowed. This particular post focuses only on Tolkien boardgames from the 1970’s.

The earliest Tolkien boardgame that I know of was released in 1970 and is called Conquest of the Ring. By today’s standards, the game is very simple, being a basic maze. Despite what one might thing based on the name of the game, this game is based on The Hobbit, not The Lord of the Rings.

Some people might include some of the roleplaying games of the 1970’s as being “Tolkien boardgames”, games like Chainmail and Dungeons and Dragons. But to my way of thinking, Chainmail is a miniatures game, not a boardgame, and Dungeons and Dragons is a roleplaying game, not a boardgame. And both of those games have only a loose connection to the works of Tolkien.

A game called Quest of the Magic Ring from 1975 was obviously inspired by The Lord of the Rings, but rather than purchasing the license to use the actual characters, the game designers made the game more generic. “Middle Earth” became “Mythincal Earth”, and “Gandalf” became “Gandolf”. Aragorn became even more generic, being called “The Ranger” in the game.

Several miniature and wargame versions of Tolkien’s works were released in 1975 and 1976, but the production values of these were so poor that they can only really be considered fan publications. Some of these games include The Battle of Five Armies, Siege of Minas Tirith, and Two Towers. Most of these games are almost impossible to find today.

Milton Bradley produced Tolkien related boardgames in the later part of the decade too. One of these included The Hobbit. The other notable Milton Bradley Tolkien boardgame was called The Lord of the Rings Adventure Game, and the box featured artwork from the animated movie.

Board game collectors might be interested in Tolkien based boardgames from other decades too, but that will have to wait for a later article.
